Hannah's Intern Diary- Goodbye James!

Fellow intern James has just come to the end of his internship with Event Durham. I thought it would be good to hear his perspective on life as an intern, what he has learnt and what he plans on doing next! Here's what James had to say...

Hi, my name is James and I have just completed a seven month internship at Event Durham. At Event Durham, as well as sharing an office with Retail, we manage events taking place across the University. I applied for this internship after enjoying my time spent organising events for SCA, the University’s student volunteering service, during which I worked closely with the Event Durham to book rooms and catering.

In my internship role, I was part of the Conference Administration team, responsible for assisting academics with the organisation of large conferences within the University. However, as well as this fascinating job, my role as intern was much more varied. I was involved in areas as diverse as marketing of the family activities taking place at Durham University Visitor Attractions, building a new website for the Botanic Garden, taking bookings for our Summer Study programme and driving all over Durham delivering poster boards! On top of that, I was given responsibility for completing three progressive projects: improving conference promotion, researching competitor services and analysing delegate feedback.

My time at Event Durham has been busy but very enjoyable, shown by the fact the last few months have flown by. I have found my role very rewarding and am leaving it with a wealth of new experience. Not only has it been valuable to work in a department outside of academia, where professionalism and customer service are demanded at all times, but the range of jobs my internship has entailed have lead to me developing skills I never otherwise would have had. Experience in marketing, design, customer relations, business report writing and finance have all added to my skill set.

For this reason I would recommend anyone to consider an internship within Event Durham (in fact, they are currently advertising for my replacement). What’s more, it has been a load of fun… Thank you Event Durham for a fantastic few months!

James will be missed in the office but we wish him the very best of luck in the future and hope that he can put some of the skills and knowledge he has gained during his time with Event Durham to good use.
